Time Stamped Show Notes:

02:06 – The event in SMMW17 (Social Media Marketing World)

Social media examiner is owned and run by Michael Stelzner. It’s very reputable,  Social Media Examiner is one of the most reputable social media educational platforms out there.  Five years ago, he decided to go and do a live event in San Diego and he fortunately had a lot of people that he was well connected with like Amy Porterfield,  Mari Smith who are part of the speakers for the event.  This year’s attendance was 3,800.

The kickoff evening event was on a naval ship.  Lots of social media capturing the moment with selfies.   The key to selfies is to take the picture with the camera looking down towards you in order to eliminate the double chin effect.

07:30 – Michael Stelzner is a CEO & Founder at Social Media Examiner. He talked about the Facebook news feed and his main focus with Facebook and community.

  • He also talked about how the Facebook news feed is dying on reaching people, but he talked about ways to overcome the news feed.

“It’s dead if you don’t know what you’re doing !”

If you don’t know what you’re doing with Facebook,  it will not work for you. So, you really need to know what you’re doing.

08:34 – Refocusing on community

  • Build the community instead of focusing on pitching your product

08:55 – Of all the pages on Facebook, how many of them do you think are using advertising?

6.7 %   But the key is to be highly targeted, be very specific get highly targeted and then you can actually do a little ads for that and video is the key!

10:37 – How can you bust through the algorithm

15:42 – Mari Smith highlighted video!

She was talking a lot about video and the key takeaway is square video is converting better if side by side they tested it and because of the whole Instagram thing square video is actually converting better and those videos or  any videos actually get three times more engagement.

A good sample to look at is a cheque books and Lumyer  is another sample that Janet’s talked about that she used a lot for creating a quick video square stick an image and adding a little something fun to it. You can download on an iphone or android or any of them.

17:28 – Animoto – Square Video test better

Turn your photos and video clips into share worthy marketing videos and slideshow videos, designed to stand out on social. Tell your story in minutes.

The Instagram thing has grown to be commonplace and Instagram is square.

20:41 – Facebook Groups

We talked about groups and the key is if you decide to monetize your group you can spend time there. You want to definitely have your group closed, just not secret, but also not open, because if you have it open that’s when spammers tend to come in. You want to have your Facebook group closed and do giveaways often that would help to really grow the group.

  • We talked about how to grow the group: five day challenges, different challenges that you can do,  those are the types of things that really grow a group.

22:13 – Landing podcasts, being on more shows as a podcast guest

  • Just like being a speaker, you need a speaker page, you need a podcast page!
  • Don’t worry about how many downloads the podcast has don’t worry about how much is listened to.
  • Ask yourself -Is their audience my audience that I could give value to and if you can answer yes to that, then that would be a perfect podcast to approach.

John Lee Dumas –who spoke at the event and runs Entrepreneur On Fire and he was one running the panel discussion on this topic.

Janet would love to be on Social Media Examiner’s Podcast with Michael Stelzner!

24:31 – You truly have to document yourself in order to be considered for a podcast.

Create a landing page for the show specifically and then give a gift to the listening audience, it’s a great way to build your email list by being on their show, too.

24:53 – Dennis Yu – Was the BEST for Facebook ads-video, video, video

  • He did a video and he targeted employers of high-profile website magazines like BuzzFeed.
  • They picked up the video and because it got in front of those type of people, they shared it to their page which created major viral and then he shared it back to his page and puts more money behind it and all those views are following along.
  • Test it for $1 day for a few days
  • It’s kind of PR in a way where you’re getting your brand in front of the types of people that you want to.

Here is the link to Dennis Yu’s $1 a day strategy

28:40 – The final day, the keynote talked about the future of bots, they did talk a little bit about the VR They talked about coding the future in what kids are going to be doing in their careers and if it’s something that people can do again and again, it’s probably going to be taken over by Bots. If it’s creative, they will still need humans for it.  So, think about it as far as careers of the future and what it means.

31:01 – Alex Khan – Facebook lives-have a catchy title. We should expand on it

  • He does Periscope very well , teachings were both Periscope and Facebook live
  • He does Periscope, he’s one of the top ones and get millions and millions of viewers, so he’s doing very well with.
  • *Alex Khan tips:

Get right to it in the first minute, have a catchy title, introduced yourself, introduced to topic, and ask an easy answer questions.

Here’s a good point from Alex: They come because of the content, they stay for the community.

33:36 – Mark Schaefer – He just wrote a book called “KNOWN” I think this is good for everybody that is looking to build their presence better and become an authority in a certain potential niche.

You want to be known: presence, reputation and authority . Those are the three keys. It’s not about being famous, not about being a celebrity, it’s about just being known for a certain thing.

He talked about the emotional connection through content and you need to be consistent and have tenacity.  Believe it or not, he talked about it not being a year or two year thing, he talked about the average mindset for this to really be that known person, if you’re just starting out is a 30 month mindset.

So, if you’re doing YouTube,  you want to do Youtube,  but you want it to be a podcast,  have it be that podcast.  You know, take something and get really good at it and then be known in a certain niche for it.

Terry said in the past, it was what you know, then in the 70’s it was who you know, as the brand movement became prevalent, it has become who knows you, essentially becoming an influencer.

Janet will be attending Social Media Marketing World again next year and recommends it for the listening audience.
